AMERICAN BLUES: This lecture with live music performance examples performed by Eric Bascom on guitar and vocals, offers a historical context of this original and iconic American musical art from from its early traditional pre-turn of the century roots to our modern times. Eric Bascom will discuss the evolution of the blues in its many forms, and will demonstrate through performance some the key evolutionary periods of this original musical art form that shaped American popular music – from Tin Pan Alley and Broadway, to jazz, rhythm & blues, rock ’n’ roll, Motown and beyond.

WHAT IS JAZZ?
This lecture with live music examples performed by the Eric Bascom Trio featuring Eric Bascom on guitar, Ed Brainerd on trumpet, and Wayne Roberts on double bass offers a historical context of this original and iconic American musical art form. From its early turn of the 20th century roots of traditional jazz, to the swing era, to bebop, to cool jazz, to the post bebop era, Bossa Nova, Latin, fusion music, and right up through to our modern times. The live music performance by the Eric Bascom Trio will include selections from the works of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, and others.

THE MUSIC OF MILES DAVIS
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE MUSICIAN MILES DAVIS AND HIS MUSIC:
Jazz icon, trumpeter, and composer Miles Davis was born on May 26th, 1926. In celebration of his life and the music Miles Davis made, this lecture by Eric Bascom will take us from his early days growing up in in St. Louis; to his college years at The Juilliard School in New York City; to performing the music known as “Bebop” with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; to his work on the innovations that created the “Birth of the Cool” style: to the music Miles made with his legendary first and second quintets; to his orchestral recordings with composer/arranger, Gil Evans; to his contributions to “Modal Jazz”; and up through his modern electric period which at that time created a great controversy among the jazz community that rejected the addition of electronic instruments to the music. Included will be a performance by the Eric Bascom Trio featuring selections from Miles’s seminal work from his 1959 album, “Kind of Blue”, that remains the number one selling jazz album of all time. Eric, performing on guitar, will be joined by trumpeter, Edward Brainerd, and Wayne Roberts on the double bass.
